Jack Garry is a multifaceted musician based in Highland Park, Los Angeles. His chameleon-like talent set is unique, displayed in his work in the genre-bending duo Universal Charging Squid.
The guitar started Jack's musical journey in pre-adolescence.
Early inspirations included Oasis, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Elliott Smith, The Beatles, and early Genesis. He later became influenced by increasingly improvisational and psychedelic guitar playing, honing the ability to create on the fly early.
His musical tastes were further refined in the indie rock mecca of Athens, Georgia. The experimentation and cultural influence of bands from Sonic Youth to Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys entered his orbit. Playing guitar and experimenting with various styles became a many-hours-a-day routine.
As a teenager, an interest in the jazz of greats like Mingus and Coltrane took over, leading to a deeper study of musical theory and composition and a developing proficiency as a bassist. During a period of many, primarily West Coast relocations throughout the US, he played in nightclubs while still too young to get into them,
Jack eventually formed an indie rock project in early-Killers era Las Vegas, Nevada, and became inculcated into the burgeoning local rock scene. As a late teen and young adult, he continued to explore various forms of rock, electronic, singer-songwriter, and other genres.
Finding hip-hop and R&B during this time, serious music production and rapping became his next focus. Highly inspired by the Soulquarians and music from the Okayplayer camp, he dug in the crates, got out his pen, and refined his skills in this arena with great respect for the craft.
Eventually moving to the hip-hop hotbed of Atlanta, Georgia, he produced and performed with fellow artists and became a part of the bubbling local scene. This included production, performing in hip-hop/R&B bands as a guitarist, session guitar and bass work, and live performances as a producer/DJ.
Jack is booking out of Los Angeles for live/session guitar and bass, vocals, programming, music production, songwriting, composing, and mixing. He is also available for lessons, consulting, or to grab a coffee at Kumquat.
